Sun, old cottages and HOA colors in Redwood City

NOAA's Redwood City station averages a summer high of 80.2F and 79 days a year at 80F or more. Hot sun on a south or west wall makes paint dry before it levels out, which shows as lap marks, so in summer we follow the shade around the house. Winter lows average 41.1F, below the minimum on some paint labels, so cold-season work waits for milder days.

Several Queen Anne cottages from before 1906 stand in Mezesville, and old wood like that needs careful scraping; on homes built before 1978, federal lead rules apply. In Redwood Shores, over 1,300 single-family lots fall under HOA CC&Rs, so check whether your association approves colors before you choose. Contractors can't work weekends here without written approval, so Redwood City paint days are weekdays.

Worth knowing about Redwood City

  • Redwood Shores depends on levees; FEMA said in 2020 that without upgrades it would be remapped as a flood hazard area, with about 4,700 households needing flood insurance.
  • At NOAA's Redwood City station, 1991 to 2020 normals put summer highs at 80.2F and winter lows at 41.1F.
  • Of Redwood City's 32,135 housing units, 64.2% were built before 1980 and 8.1% in 1939 or earlier; the 1950s alone account for 21.2%.

I hired Junior and his team to install Govee Pro outdoor lights with tracks along my roofline, which has a lot of tricky angles and turns. They did an incredible job — everything looks clean, professional, and aligned. Junior showed up on time, worked efficiently, and even helped with a few extra repairs around the house. I’m thrilled with the results and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him for any home improvement or maintenance work.

J&J and Junior and crew provides great Handyman services and support especially for seniors that need a little excellent home maintenance for a reasonable price. Junior and crew repaired and caulked my upstairs shower pan to its shower wall and helped mme clean up my roof deck by cleaning up leafe debris. They were prompt and knowledgeable and honest about their estimates to complete the maintenance. Highly recommended for repair and fixing those tough maintenance jobs you don’t have the time or expertise to finish.

Exterior paint in Redwood City: questions

Do you work in Redwood City?

Yes. Redwood City is about 15 road miles from our base in San Bruno, roughly 22 minutes without traffic. We work all over town, from Mt. Carmel to Friendly Acres.

Who issues permits in Redwood City?

The City of Redwood City Community Development Department, Building Division (Building & Code Enforcement). Repairs and like-for-like replacements often don't need a permit; layout changes, new plumbing or new electrical usually do. When one is needed, the job is contracted through our licensed partner Bay Builder Inc.

When can noisy work happen in Redwood City?

Construction may run 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and contractors can't work weekends or City holidays without written approval from the Building Official, requested 30 calendar days before construction starts. We schedule noisy work inside those hours.

Do you prep the outside before painting?

Always. Washing, scraping loose paint, fixing cracks and soft trim, caulking and priming bare spots come before the first coat, and they're in the estimate.
