Paint is the last layer, so it shows everything under it. Most of a good paint job happens before the roller: moving and covering furniture, filling holes, fixing cracks, sanding, caulking the gaps at the trim and priming the patches.

Then it's two coats, cut in by hand at the ceiling line and along the trim. Satin or semi-gloss on trim and doors, flat on ceilings, and a finish on walls that can take a wipe in kitchens, baths and hallways.

Outside work is on the list too: trim, doors, fences and deck stain.
