San Mateo Park was laid out from 1902, with roads that follow the rolling ground, and Hayward Park's square blocks between 9th and 16th Avenues hold many early California bungalows. In houses that old, doors have usually been planed, rehung and painted more than once, and the wood still swells and shrinks with the seasons.
